How to start a home care agency
The honest, practical version, including the part the other guides skip: the numbers, and how to build for private pay from day one.

Deciding, and choosing your model
Before anything else, be honest about what you’re taking on. Visiting care, live-in care, and the lighter introductory model each ask for very different things. Most first-timers don’t know the difference until someone explains it plainly, so start by picking the model that fits the life and the business you actually want.
The real numbers
This is where most guides go quiet. Work out your true start-up cost, what you can charge, what carers cost you once wages, on-costs and travel are in, and how many hours a week it takes to break even and then to pay yourself. Get this on a page before you commit a penny.
The business plan
A plan is not a paragraph of good intentions. Set out your model, your market, your numbers, and how the agency runs day to day, in the order a bank or funder expects. This is also where you decide, on purpose, to aim at private pay.
Setting it up
Register the business, arrange the insurances a care agency genuinely needs, and put your day-one systems in place. The regulatory journey runs through the Care Quality Commission, and the official guidance lives with them, so always work from the source rather than second-hand summaries.
Start with the official sources: the Care Quality Commission and gov.uk.
Finding your first carers
Recruitment quietly decides whether the agency survives. Write adverts that speak to carers rather than at them, be clear about pay and values, and bring people on board properly so they don’t leave in the first fortnight.
Finding your first private-pay clients
Private clients come through reputation and relationships, not council frameworks. Build links with GPs, hospital discharge teams and the local community, and make it easy for families to say yes. This is the craft that turns a registered business into a living one.
Your first 90 days
Opening is the start, not the finish. Put a simple weekly rhythm in place, watch the few numbers that matter, and keep clients and carers happy while everything is new.
Reading is the easy part. Doing it is where the Blueprint helps.
The guide tells you the path. The Blueprint hands you the tools, the templates, and the numbers to actually walk it.

- People also ask
How much does it cost to start a home care agency?
It varies widely, which is exactly why a fixed range like “three to fifteen thousand” isn’t much help. Our free calculator works out your own figure from your own rates and costs.
Do I need to be registered before I take clients?
Yes. You must complete registration with the Care Quality Commission before providing personal care. Always work from their official guidance.
Is private pay really better than council work?
For margin and sustainability, usually yes, but only if you build for it deliberately. That’s the whole focus of the Blueprint.
